Tree of Life

The tree in this picture is taken directly from the drawing ‘Little Dorrito’ but the trunk and branches are treated quite differently here. The bark is painted in a series of coloured stripes which start as yellow and then merge into orange and red.

The branches above have been curved and twisted to show the blowing of the wind while the leaves have been painted impressionistically to indicate that this is a gentle breeze. The result is that figures climbing up the branches or relaxing together will be refreshed rather than blown from their perches.
